STEM Identity: How Professionals in STEM Position Their Work

Sun, April 30, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

The current teaching of STEM content seems to manifests as isolated disciplines where content and practices are independent of one another as opposed to the manner in which STEM happens in the “wild.” Therefore, students are likely not developing the knowledge, dispositions, and skills of professionals practicing STEM. The purpose of this study is to explore the manner in which professionals in STEM fields position their career role and narrate their professional identities within STEM, and compare findings across fields. Results highlight the interdisciplinary nature of STEM, as well as the interdisciplinary nature of professionals' identity in STEM.
