Coaching Parents and Teachers How to Positively Support Individuals With Autism That Present Challenging Behaviors

Abstract

This case series study provides a systematic coaching approach for parents and teachers to understand and positively support individuals with autism who display challenging behaviors. Inclusion in schools and in social life is greatly limited by the presence of challenging behaviors in individuals with autism. Behavioral supports can be developed in natural environments to support these challenging behaviors. To improve the quality of data collection and social validity, parents and teachers are being trained to participate in the development of these behavioral supports. Through close examination of the context and variables maintaining the behavior, coached parents or teachers were able to brainstorm functions of the behavior and thus develop strategies to support the unmet need.
