Computer science education has recently become a national priority, but many educators and researchers are concerned about perpetuating inequities in access and quality of learning opportunities. Given the limited number of computer science education opportunities in low socioeconomic communities, there is a critical need to understand how to strengthen CS education in informal settings. This paper describes a design-based implementation research study that involves a collaboration between a community-based technology center in a rural, primarily Latino/a community and a research team at a nearby non-profit organization. Qualitative data are used to identify key strategies for developing a research-practice partnership, which is an essential first step in conducting rigorous and relevant research in underserved communities.
