The Evaluation of Two Mathematics Tools Within a 21st-Century Framework in a Grade 6 Classroom

Abstract

In this action research study, a Grade 6 teacher implemented and assessed the effectiveness of 2 mathematics tools: the iPad app, Front Row, and interactive notebooks. The study used both qualitative and quantitative data through the use of observations, math profile assessments, reports from Front Row, and questionnaires. Student perception was compared using results from both the pre- and post-survey. The use of interactive notebooks and the Front Row iPad app within a 21st century framework for teaching math had a positive impact on the students’ achievement. In addition, the students recognized the value of technology and collaboration when learning math, and they enjoyed the use of interactive notebooks, as well as Front Row.
