This paper describes a framework for indigenous science and environmental education grounded in an ecology that emphasizes the 'imbeddedness' of human technologies, cultures and societies within a physical ‘ecology of place.’ The model describes a range of technical, socio-cultural and ecological influences that shape both the landscape of botanical gardens and educators' interpretations of their curriculum. The paper explores the model within the context of island communities where we are applying the framework in specific ways -- contributing to the professional development of teachers in what we term: 'islands of discourse.'
