Student MetaSkills Survey: Measuring Opportunity to Learn, Practice, and Demonstrate Essential Skills

Abstract

This study developed and evaluated a survey measuring high school students’ opportunity to learn, practice, and apply a core set of intrapersonal and interpersonal skills—communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and self-directed learning.. The Student MetaSkills Survey development process aimed at creating a robust self-report measure to assess high school student’s perceived behavioral and metacognitive tendencies related to schools given the opportunity to learn, practice, and demonstrate those skills. Our sample included the 9th grade of one large comprehensive high school in rural, southern California. The results of this study provide promise of strong reliability and validity of the SMS for the purpose intended by the survey designers and school partners.
