Formative Reflection in Design-Based Research and Development of a Game-Based Virtual Learning Environment

Thu, April 27, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 2

Abstract

The interdisciplinary Virtual Reality Field Experiences (VRFE) team at Public University is comprised of geoscientists, education specialists, game developers, and a sociologist. The goal of the project is to create an immersive, geoscience education game in virtual reality for introductory students, with the Grand Canyon as the location focus. Using design-based research methods, we collected participant feedback on our virtual reality Grand Canyon trip designed to teach geological concepts. Participants preferred greater flexibility with avatar speed, a fixed location for the third-person camera, storylines that parallel game learning objectives, and post-apocalyptic and alien narratives, rather than a park ranger narrative
