Our study uses Gee's (2005) concept of Discourses to examine varying teacher responses to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Our qualitative case study found that there were three dominant Discourses reflected in teacher talk about the CCSS. These Discourses, teaching as service to students, teaching as service to the employer, and teaching as service to oneself, reflected particular sets of teacher values and beliefs. Thus teachers were not solely teachers, but particular types of teachers.
