The purpose of the present study is to investigate how Japanese culture is portrayed in children’s picture books. Our analysis of the representation of Japanese culture in text and illustrations was based on a sample of 26 picture books written in English and published in the U.S. between 1990 and 2016. The findings revealed that (1) images representing Japanese culture and scenes of Japanese cities were outdated and inaccurate (2) social customs and behaviors led to showing Japanese values, and (3) books dealing with Japanese historical events/political issues included the voice of Japanese by taking Japanese perspectives, instead of Euro-American perspectives. This study provides implications for our understanding of the importance of cultural authenticity in children’s books.
