"Porque, He Don't Go to the School": Emergent Bilinguals' Language Resources in New Migration Destinations

Mon, May 1, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This article examines the resources that emergent bilingual students mobilize in their oral reading and retelling of texts. It also situates these resources within their family literacy practices, examining the ways they shape how children retell texts in their second language. Informed by critical approaches to family engagement, and repertoire-based approaches to examine languages and literacies, we analyze the literacy assessment performance of three elementary school students, and the perspectives of their Spanish-dominant mothers about their performance. Our findings showcase the various languages and dialects that students negotiate when they make meaning of texts in the context of the U.S. South, a relatively new migration destination. Implications to expand literacy assessment interpretations are discussed for practitioners and teacher educators.
