Research has shown that dialogic instruction impacts student learning. However, the majority of this research has been conducted on peer-to-peer or teacher-guided dialogue in face-to-face classrooms. In this study, I fill a literature gap by focusing on dialogue among middle school students and college student mentors within and around a science video game. I employ a unified discourse lens and the constant comparative approach to develop the framework for a grounded theory about media-based mentoring in the context of an academic social network and the Mystery of Taiga River science video game. In this theoretical framework, media-based mentoring is characterized by a process of reframing relationships person-to-person, reframing relationships person to game, and reframing relationships person to world.
