Development of the Predictors of Black Outcomes in STEM Survey: Lessons From Innovations University

Abstract

We set out to develop a psychometrically sound instrument that predicts STEM-related outcomes for black students. Using 364 students from one of the leading University producers of black undergraduates in STEM, we were able to confirm the Predictors of Black Outcomes in STEM Survey (PBOSS). We validated the PBOSS for both males and females and were able to use reflections from high school experiences to successfully predict: (a) selection of a STEM major versus a non-STEM major, (b) enrollment in pre-calculus versus a lower mathematics course, and (c) enrollment in calculus versus a lower mathematics course in college. Results from this study will be shared with the larger research community.
