Self-regulated learning (SRL) is an important skill in education and later life but it can be hard for students to regulate their own learning. Motivation can influence whether a student will engage in SRL. In this study secondary school students’ motivation was measured and they were trained to solve biology problems, monitor and make regulation choices about it. In two experiments, latent profile analysis resulted in four motivational profiles that were similar across both experiments. Findings showed that students with a high autonomous and low external motivational profile (Experiment 1) or a moderate autonomous motivation profile (Experiment 2) scored higher on monitoring accuracy and test performance than students with a low autonomous and high external motivational profile.
