Abstract

The internationalization of study programs and the increasing diversity of the student body call for transparency of and valid information on the knowledge and skills students acquire in higher education. Hereby, several theoretical and methodological challenges arise from the immense diversity of degree courses, study programs, and institutions. A recent literature review has revealed a substantial lack of research on assessment practices in higher education, especially on competency models as well as on measurement models and valid methods for competency assessment. This paper displays the results of this review addressing pressing issues concerning theoretical, conceptual and methodological challenges, and discusses how results of the German research program on modeling and measuring competencies in higher education (KoKoHs) contributes to these.
