Development and Validation of a Perceived Need Support Scale

Sun, April 30, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 206 B

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable scale to assess students’ perceived need for teacher support. According to self-determination theory, the contextual social factors that support three psychological needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy influence students’ motivation, which, in turn, has several educational outcomes. This study included 460 participants who were ensemble students in U.S. high schools. Based on previous research, a total of 26 items were put into the a priori categories. Based on factor loadings (exploratory factor analysis), 21 items were selected. Confirmatory factor analysis also revealed that the scale was found to have satisfactory model fit: Sattora-Bentler χ2 (186) = 838.60, p < .001; SRMR= .06; CFI= .93; RMSEA= .06.
