Teaching multilingual learners in content classrooms is still a challenge for most teachers due to a lack of preparation. The presented study gives insights to the question whether the competencies needed to teach multilingual learners appropriately are learnable through university classes. Three different class formats were examined: 100% online via an e-learning platform, 100% face-to-face, and a hybrid version (50% online, 50% face-to-face). The level of competency was assessed by a test developed by the German project DaZKom. First results indicate that the competencies to teach multilingual learners increase with opportunities to learn. The results for the 100% online class as well as the 100% face-to-face class show significant effects for the increase of competencies in teaching multilingual learners.
