Exploring the Common Story Lines in an Online Community Through Visual Mapping to Design STEM Pedagogical Resources

Fri, April 28, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

It is important for teachers to devise equity-oriented learning spaces where math and science classroom activities are more culturally responsive. This study explores how an online community of practice between STEM teacher educators, middle school students who are predominately racial minorities, their STEM teachers, and engineers share stories online as a first step to designing pedagogical resources. Findings show promise in using multiple forms of visual mapping for co-constructing resources within the community. Challenges were found in ensuring resources remained authentic to students’ lived experiences.
