Abstract

Faculty members are central to higher education institutions, and in research universities the quality of the professoriate is critical (Albatch, 2003). In Chile there are no research universities technically (Bernasconi, 2007) but some with the intention. A way to study this phenomenon is through the professionalization of the academic career. This study was guided by the question “How do the academic guidelines from 1967-2016 reflect the professionalization of the academic profession in the six “research universities” in Chile?” Preliminary findings highlighted that universities currently coincide in having a similar ordinary academic hierarchy but could dedicate less than full-time to the academic profession, a rarity in the international context. Interestingly, all universities showed some degree of internationalization in their academic guidelines.
