This paper reports on a two-year national project conducted in Australia to understand how to help each tertiary student succeed. It began from observation of inadequacies associated with prevailing perspectives and approaches, and of the need to join research on student success, with institutional research, and with institutional leadership. A large team of researchers from several universities conducted research reviews and consultations, surveyed institutional representatives, interviewed students, and consulted with hundreds of experts through workshops and seminars. The paper reports key findings regarding the proposed model of the student experience, approaches to institutional enhancement, and the development of national advisory resources and infrastructure to guide broader system-level change.
