Encouraging Interest in STEM Careers: The Role of Dual Enrollment Coursework

Mon, May 1, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 205

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between taking a college STEM course while enrolled in high school (dual enrollment) and reported interest in STEM careers by the end of high school. Data were collected through a national survey of college students (n=15,847) who provided information about their high school course-taking and career interests. Controlling for seven confounding variables, results showed that students who took STEM dual enrollment courses were 1.3 times more likely to be interested in STEM careers by the end of high school (p < .05). This study is the first to examine the link between dual enrollment and career interest and reveals another avenue through which high school students may be encouraged to pursue STEM careers.
