Exploring College Students' Experiences of Success and Sense of Belonging Across Contexts: A Phenomenological Study

Abstract

Research suggests that student success across the K-20 pipeline is related to students’ sense of belonging and that belonging is contextual. However, research exploring the connection between success and belonging across contexts is scant. This phenomenological study explored the connection between student success and sense of belonging across multiple contexts using 270 undergraduates’ descriptions of their past successes. Results showed that although students’ experiences of success in terms of belonging differed by context (e.g., academic, extracurricular), three similarities across contexts emerged: (a) fighting to belong, (b) standing out, and (c) support. Implications for practice, policy, and future research are discussed in terms of providing equal educational opportunities for all students.
