Increasing College Access and Success for Underrepresented Groups: The Impact and Implementation of Early Colleges

Abstract

Early colleges are schools that blur the line between high school and college. They are targeted at students who are underrepresented in college and provide an environment explicitly focused on college readiness. This paper presents results from a larger IES-funded experimental study designed to look at the impact and implementation of this model. Results show that early college students are more likely to complete a college preparatory course of study and graduate from high school on time. They are also more likely to enroll in postsecondary education. Impacts are higher for students who are first generation college-goers and those who are low-income.
