Child Docent Training and Cultural Reproduction: A Taiwanese Case

Fri, April 28, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

This paper demonstrated Bourdieu’s (1973) theory of cultural reproduction through discussing a child docent training project, associated with the National Palace Museum of Taiwan and a privileged elementary school’s teachers and students in Taipei City. The selection of this project’s student members played a key role in such reproduction. Its learning activities increased these students’ linguistic, cultural, artistic competence, part of dominant class’s habitus. Also, this paper practically showed several preconditions, necessary to make the school leading model of museum-school collaboration happen, which was rarely seen in the educational system of Taiwan.
