Advancing Inclusive Science and Systemic Change: The Convergence of National Aims and Institutional Goals

Sun, April 30, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Persistent disparities exist across U.S. racial/ethnic populations on key science indicators, from degree attainment to career achievements. For example, despite decades of federal investment in interventions to train diverse individuals for the biomedical research workforce, research shows disparate adjusted rates of R01 grant awards by scientists’ race/ethnicity. This compelled the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to reexamine internal review processes and fund a collaborative between institutional agents engaged in science training, researchers, and NIH program staff known as the Diversity Program Consortium (DPC). The purpose of this paper is to define and provide a national example of an inclusive science and systemic change effort, which is motivated by social science evidence and collective action to reduce disparities.
