Capturing Informal Learning From Others Using Mixed Methods Designs: A Literature Review and Empirical Demonstration

Abstract

In this roundtable presentation, we discuss ways of integrating multimethod and mixed method research (MMMR) in the field of workplace learning. This matters for two reasons. First, MMMR has shown to be open to investigations that also include marginalized groups of research subjects – a feature that aids the AERA 2017 Annual Meeting's theme of “achieving [...] equal educational opportunity". Second, MMMR may be a viable approach to investigate hard to measure concepts such as informal learning from others, where both qualitative and quantitative research studies faced severe limitations in past research. We present a literature review and demonstrate with a case-study how MMMR may inform how we measure informal learning from others in a more balanced way.
