This is a study of 20 elementary teachers, focusing especially on their tenth year of teaching (2013-2014). The teachers gave high priority to social and emotional learning (SEL) and articulated compelling reasons for doing so. They also found ways to combine fostering SEL with teaching required academic content, and described how – over the years – they had grown in their ability to do this. However, much of this progress was achieved on their own: in their pre-service preparation these two learning realms tended to be discussed separately. We conclude with the recommendation that all pre-service – and in-service – endeavors give extensive attention to “doing both” in this sense, otherwise in these “testing times” SEL will be neglected.
