A National Survey of Teaching Artists

Sat, April 29, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This study adds to that literature about teaching artists by describing the results of a national survey of teaching artists (TA) working in K-12 schools. The survey describes TA characteristics, classroom roles, professional development and supervision, and teacher efficacy. The study provides support for the findings of prior studies regarding the demographics and duties of teaching artists. In addition, TAs report high teacher efficacy, experiences across grade levels and in diverse school contexts, and a variety of professional development and mentoring experiences. The majority of teaching artists report that they have received positive feedback from school personnel and other teaching artists. The results of the study are presented in light of prior studies and implications of the study are discussed.
