Abstract

At the beginning of 20th century, the economic and military situation in Spain was into a state of confusion and this provoked strong political tensions. Simultaneously, the cultural and intellectual scene developed exceptionally a fascinating degree of momentum. An example of this was the pedagogue Ferrer i Guàrdia, who was internationally known in the field of popular culture for his educational project, called the Modern School. This project was specifically aimed at the lowest social classes in order they could access to a quality education, thereby developing their skills in a society where education was limited to the upper classes. Both, his project and Ferrer i Guàrdia himself, were persecuted until he was finally sentenced to death in October 1909.
