One Principal's Moral and Ethical Orientation to Practice

Abstract

This case study addresses how one elementary school principal approaches ethical issues in her practice; it further considers the extent of her awareness of such issues as being ethical.

This case study is a portrait of a principal grappling with the ethical dimensions of her practice. These dimensions include being a role model; building supportive and trusting relationships; fostering honest and respectful communication; making decisions guided by fairness and justice; creating a caring and inclusive school community; and cultivating a kind and compassionate school climate.

Results indicate that the principal plays a critical role in building an ethical school community and in cultivating an ethical school climate. The principal’s professional and life experiences influence the moral dimensions of her work.
