Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

The purpose of this research synthesis is to determine the effectiveness of different bilingual language and literacy intervention approaches on language and literacy outcomes of dual language learners (DLLs) with disabilities or considered at-risk. Ten studies (13 articles) that met the inclusion criteria were identified and reviewed. Overall, the synthesis findings align with and expand on existing research evidence about the effectiveness of bilingual language and literacy intervention for DLLs with disabilities or considered at-risk. This synthesis identified (a) four approaches to bilingual language and literacy intervention and (b) the number of studies illustrating different effects of each bilingual approach on different language and literacy outcomes when compared to business-as-usual and/or monolingual majority/second language intervention.
