Asian immigrant parents often hold high academic and career expectations for their children, but the process by which expectations influence their children’s career trajectory is less understood. In this study, 13 Asian Americans (6 male, 7 female) who graduated from two different early entrance programs were interviewed in-depth about the influence of their parental expectations on academics, careers, and well-being. Findings indicated that both men and women experienced high parental expectations which were often internalized. However, more women expressed specific and rigid career expectations. A few participants also reported experiencing parental pressures, stress, sense of failure and depression. Implications for well-being are discussed.
