"Addressing Social Justice, That's Like the Last Thing": Asian Teacher Educators' Negotiations in Implementing Social Justice–Oriented Multicultural Education in Their Guidance Practice

Sat, April 29, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Fourth Floor, Republic A

Abstract

Teacher educators must develop a coherent vision of multicultural teacher education and work together in preparing pre-service teachers who can create and implement multicultural curriculum and pedagogy that are social justice-oriented. This study examines whether and in what ways teacher educators who work as student teaching seminar instructors and field supervisors incorporate notions of diversity, equity, and social justice in their guidance practice. This study zooms into the experiences of four Asian doctoral students who work as early childhood teacher educators in a predominantly White teacher education institution in the U.S. We attempt to learn about some of the tensions and negotiations they experience in navigating a situated teacher education space.
