Who Owns the Postsecondary Pipeline? Whiteness as Property and the Myth of Meritocracy

Sat, April 29, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

As this research demonstrates, the extant research on educational equity offers important considerations to better understand the barriers of selective universities’ admissions criteria for particular students of Color and students from low-income families. The intersection between race and poverty demonstrates that students of Color are disproportionately living in poverty and are doubly segregated by race and socioeconomic status in public K-12 schools where they have less and inferior opportunities for academic advancement. Through a critical theoretical lens, that lends the notion of whiteness as property as an analytical concept, this project synthesizes the literature on the structural barriers to admission into selective universities where admission is based primarily on criteria often under- or un-available to students of Color.
