Abstract

For African American and Latino/a youth in urban school settings, identities are fluid, prescribed, and ascribed legitimizing the inherent nature of contextual situations. Their experiences highlight the struggle in linking a coherent sense of oneself and one’s place in the world with academia, each situating and influencing the other. This mixed-method longitudinal research study evaluates the intersections between academic achievement and REI of 23 African-American and Latino/a youth. From the theoretical perspective of intersectionality, this evaluation explores the intersections of REI with academic identity of African-American and Latino/a youth in urban school settings and provides an initial framework of their intersectional identity.
