Our research aims to synthesize the vast amount of literature on computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) in STEM education that was published between 2005-2014. We utilized a latent class analysis (LCA) to identify and characterize groups of empirical research papers using similar types of collaboration, technology and pedagogies. Results of the LCA pointed to a six cluster solution. The two most robust clusters emphasize mediated inquiry with dynamic feedback within K-12 education and asynchronous teacher-directed discussion within higher-education. We have synthesized across and within these two clusters to 1) help us identify robust trends in this diverse array of research and 2) help us better understand the positive outcomes associated with these specific conditions of CSCL in STEM education.
