Abstract

Using Tinto’s interactionalist model and a lens of socialization, we explored factors that influence MD-PhD program attrition and alternative career pathways that MD-PhD dropouts pursue. In this qualitative case study, we conducted seven in-depth, semi-structured interviews across the US with MD-PhD-program dropouts to understand their personal struggles with the program. Six shifted to the MD-only track to have more patient interaction. We uncovered several themes to understand what attracted participants to the MD-PhD program and what led them to discontinue the program. Lack of MD-PhD mentors and unsatisfactory mentoring played a big role in the decision to leave the program along with the solitary nature of PhD training. Our findings advance our understanding about the experiences that influence MD-PhD-program attrition.
