Communication Matters in Science and Math: University-School Partnerships and Fellows in the Middle

Mon, May 1, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

The Fellows in the Middle program (FM) was a five-year project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), GK12 program. This university-school partnership aimed to foster effective communication of middle school science and math content in diverse urban settings in the northeast. The study involves graduate math and science students, middle school math and science teachers and their students. Specific program goals include: (a) improvement of graduate students' communication skills and STEM career opportunities, and (b) enhancement of the science and mathematics content knowledge of middle-school partner teachers. The study contributes to existing literature that examines a STEM pipeline at the middle school level by fostering mutually beneficial partnerships between universities and under-resourced schools.
