Student-faculty interactions have been shown to positively influence several college outcomes for students. This study considers whether students’ background characteristics, precollege attitudes and experiences, and first-year college experiences predict interactions with faculty members in the first year of college. Results suggest that student-faculty interactions differ based on students' demographic characteristics as well as the type of institution they attend. In addition, academically motivated students, those who interacted with teachers in high school, and those who are engaged in extracurricular activities are more likely to interact with faculty, while students with higher academic abilities and those with higher high school GPAs are less likely to interact with faculty.
