Abstract

This paper presents the findings of a structured self-inquiry into an academic practitioner’s work as a national social studies/ social sciences curriculum consultant for nations (non-western, developing) other than her own (western, developed). Despite contextual differences, each project in the study required the building of capacity and capability of lead teachers in national curriculum development and implementation. Therefore the projects integrated two core activities: teacher education and training, and the development of new school curricula. The study incorporated a reflective research process (partially Gestalt, partially auto-ethnograhic) to ensure the professional development and training provided was relevant and responsive to the respective nation’s efforts to develop and implement school curricula which enhances educational opportunities for all learners.
