The purpose of this study was to examine the ways student choice of instructional text impacted student learning and preservice teachers' literacy instruction during a summer reading course. Two research questions guided this study: (a) In what ways did preservice teachers’ use of genre change over time when children selected read-aloud texts to be used for instruction? (b) What opportunities were presented to the preservice teachers by having the children select texts and what were the consequences of those opportunities?
