Addressing Low Transfer Rates Through Culturally Responsive Approaches: A Multicase Study of Learning Communities

Sat, April 29, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

This study utilizes a multiple-case (Yin, 2014) approach to explore the decision-making process of institutional agents implementing developmental education learning communities (LCs) at two community colleges. Specifically, this study aims to: 1) understand the demography of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students attending two AAPI Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs), 2) the decision making process and implementation of LCs, and 3) their impact on the educational outcomes of students. We found the LCs were an effective approach to improve the success of students in developmental education. One of the key qualitative findings reveal that each of the institutions had a “Champion” who led the efforts to address the needs of AAPI students.
