Sun, April 30, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: River Level, Room 6D

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine how children understand and engage with math games in a popular virtual gaming environment during a 10-day game-playing program. A collective case study was conducted and four case studies were generated to provide insight into children’s understanding and engagement with games. Semistructured interviews, Participant observations and video recordings of game playing were collected and analyzed. Interaction analysis techniques were used to examine the interaction of participants with each other and with objects in their environment. Findings from this study provide recommendations to instructional designers, educators and parents as well as researchers in the field of games and learning.
