Recently, a controversial discussion on the similarity between grit and established concepts erupted. For the personality trait conscientiousness there has been a reasonable amount of studies showing a close but varying relationship. None of these studies conducted so far used a measure to assess the personality trait on a facet level. To address this shortcoming, we used a 48-item measure (NEO-PI R) to assess the six facets of conscientiousness and used SEM to investigate the differential relationships with grit. Results show, that grit is mostly associated with the facets achievement striving and self-discipline and that only nine percent of the variance in grit was not accounted for by conscientiousness.
