Quality in STEAM Education: Evaluation and Examination of Lesson Plans

Sat, April 29, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Using a mixed-methods approach, this study investigated the efficacy of evaluating STEAM lesson plans. Lessons were solicited from teachers nationwide, and were rated by expert reviewers in the fields of arts education and science education, along with expert practitioners. Results revealed that content area experts provide unique perspectives in the evaluation of lessons. High quality lessons involved teachers of diverse content areas and across grade levels. There was no significant difference for the experience of the teachers for the overall score of the lessons. Recommendations include further refinement and development of the rubric and characteristics of quality lessons.
