This paper presents an overview of Critical Realism, Critical Race Theory, and discusses how Critical Realism can provide philosophical support to the Critical Race Theory claim that race is a social construct that brings real consequences people of color. The main contribution is to support counter-storytelling as a powerful method to uncover causal mechanisms of race and racism in a Critical Realist perspective. Preliminary results are relevant for qualitative inquiry more broadly and follow up studies are suggested.
