Abstract

Traditional markers of a successful mathematics student include being fast and accurate. Modern mathematics teaching and learning demand different skills, including sharing, examining, and refining mathematical arguments. When there are more ways to be successful, more students succeed. What does it take for students trained in the passive recipiency of absorbing and replicating procedures to step into the new role of active agents in making sense of mathematics?
