In Poster Session: 42.084-8 - New Directions in Literacy Research
In this study we examined the relation between decoding and reading comprehension in a sample of 11,000 students ranging Grades 5-12. Using non-linear methods such as quantile regression and broken-line regression, we found a threshold score of decoding before it started to predict reading comprehension. In other words, we found that decoding and reading comprehension was not correlated below this threshold. Results were discussed under the Simple View of Reading as well as the Verbal Efficiency Theory. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
