Black Male Youth and Educational Opportunity: Positioning Theory as a Framework for Responsive Teacher Education

Abstract

This paper offers a vision of how positioning theory can inform current research, teacher education and practice, as well as speak to theoretical debates regarding Black male youth, agency, and resistance. We provide a path forward for recognizing identity negotiations and the agency at their core while acknowledging the power of dominant discourses to define and distort these young men’s identities. Drawing upon existing work in the field of positioning theory, and employing slices of data from two empirical projects, we demonstrate how positioning theory can inform ongoing research and praxis, inform teacher education, and speak to meaningful educational opportunity for minoritized youth.
