This mixed methods study showcases an urban North Carolina school district’s K-12 ESL teachers’ views and perceptions regarding the importance of academic language (AL) for equal educational opportunities. Highlights from the study’s findings include perceptions on why access to academic language development is essential, both in the context of specialized ESL program services and within content area classrooms. Study results also reveal demonstrations of facilitating academic language development in the classroom and fostering equal educational opportunities at school.
