Teachers' Perfectionism: Does It Relate to Teacher Motivation, Instructional Quality, and Job Burnout?

Sun, April 30, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Street Level, Stars at Night Ballroom 4

Abstract

Affecting key aspects of work (e.g., job burnout and work engagement), perfectionism is related to health and well-being (e.g., Dunkley, Zuroff, & Blankstein, 2003; Stoeber & Damian, 2015). To date, there is few to no evidence for the effects of perfectionism with respect to important teacher outcomes. The construct perfectionism was therefore transferred to teacher research, investigating the relations to teacher motivation, instructional quality, and burnout. With a sample of 43 teachers and 906 students we investigated the interplay between the just mentioned variables. Whereas substantial relations of perfectionism could be found for most variables of interest, the hypothesized mediation effect with teacher motivation was only weakly supported in the analyses.
